Description

Koyamaki, primarily growing at the head temple of Buddhism on Mount Koya, is considered a sacred tree. Legend has it that Kūkai, the founder of the Shingon sect, offered branches and leaves of koyamaki i to the Buddha at Mount Koya. Even today, koyamaki is used as a Buddhist flower or offered alongside other offerings.

The Mokutsuyu essential oil, extracted from the branches and leaves of koyamaki, has a calming yet refreshing aroma, evoking the feeling of being on a tree-lined path in Mount Koya.

Another, more special koyamaki (Wood Section) essential oil is extracted from koyamaki wood removed from the protective barriers (kekkai saku) at Okunoin and Kongōbu-ji temples during the 1250th anniversary of Kūkai's birth in 2023. Its aroma is deeper and richer than the regular leaf and branch version, which has a uniquely solemn and sacred meaning also.
